Spotted Hyena
Crocuta crocuta
Least ConcernOverview
Spotted Hyenas are highly intelligent and social predators with one of the strongest bite forces in the animal kingdom. Contrary to popular belief, they are skilled hunters, not just scavengers. Tanzania supports large hyena populations that play crucial ecological roles.
Behavior
Hyenas live in complex matriarchal societies called clans, led by dominant females. They have sophisticated communication systems including the famous 'laughing' calls that can carry for several kilometers.
Reproduction
Females give birth to 1-3 cubs after a 110-day gestation period. Cubs are born with teeth and compete aggressively for their mother's milk.
Conservation Status
Human persecution, habitat loss, and poisoning by livestock farmers are the main threats to hyena populations.
